Luck 'O The Irish!

Saint Joan of Arc was all Irish during March. First graders enjoyed reading many books about leprechauns throughout the month. The students were also challenged to build creative leprechaun traps in order to "snatch up" one of the leprechauns that visited our classroom. It was so exciting to see how creative the kids got with these traps, and how much they enjoyed the project. Many of the traps had green colors, rainbows, pots of gold, Lucky Charms, candy, etc. GREAT JOB FIRST GRADERS! I think we have some future engineers in our class. In the end, we weren't able to catch any of these sneaky creatures, but we sure had fun trying. And boy, did they get ahold of our classroom and destroy it. We had green paint and footprints EVERYWHERE, green glitter, chairs and desks overturned, pencil containers spilt, etc. As a class, we are determined to catch these little fellas' next year! :)

During March, we also incorporated some green cooking as part of our measuring unit in math. The students enjoyed making shamrock jello jigglers and leprechaun pie. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the cooking and providing materials.

Finally, on St. Patrick's Day Saint Joan of Arc was fortunate enough to send their Kindergarten, First, and Second grades downtown to march in the parade. The students did a FABULOUS job marching, smiling, chanting, waving, and representing the best school in the city-St. Joan of Arc. I am sure the chant, "SJA, ALL THE WAY!" was stuck in the students' heads for days! A big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who came along to make the day so successful.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration

We had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday today. The first graders each brought in some of their favorite books to read and share with their classmates. Miss Scheidler's mom came in to help us make green eggs & ham and "Cat in the Hat" hats. The students also had fun doing word searches for rhyming Dr. Seuss words. After sampling the eggs and ham, the students wrote about why they did or did not like the food. The day ended with Miss Scheidler reading her favorite Seuss book, Oh, The Places You Will Go!

Hundredth Day of School

We had a FABULOUS time celebrating the 100th day of school in February. We made patterned necklaces using 100 Fruit Loops, went on a scavenger hunt around the room for 100 stickers, wrote what we would do with 100 dollars, and a variety of other exciting activities centered around "100!" The first graders had a blast showing their understanding of "100." What a fun day! Only eighty more days until summer...

PUMPKIN WEEK!

In first grade, we will be doing a variety of activities dealing with pumpkins. Here is a sneak peek at our schedule of activities.

Monday:

We read Hidden Pumpkins and various other pumpkin books during read aloud today. We then made our very own jack-o-lanterns using geometrical shapes.
We will be graphing the shapes we used as a class onTuesday.
After drawing our jack-o-lanterns, we named them and wrote a make-believe story about them. Check these out on display in our classroom.

Tuesday:

Pumpkin math story problems (using addition and subtraction)
Discussion of the growth and stages of pumpkins.

Wednesday:

Pumpkin estimation- estimate the height, circumference, weight, number of vertical lines, and number of seeds in our class pumpkins. The students will estimate the circumference of the pumpkin and cut a piece of yarn that they think will fit exactly around the pumpkin. Then we will test the string and graph whether our strings were too short, too long, or just right. The students will then hunt around the room for other objects with the same circumference or width.
The Great Pumpking Line Up- we will line up the pumpkins according to height, and then according to how heavy we think they are. Then, we will weigh the pumpkins and talk about why size is not the only determining factor in pumpkin weight.

Thursday:

In groups of five, the students will make a list of adjectives that describe their pumpkin. Then, as a class we will read each groups attributes and try to guess which pumpkin is being described, based off of the adjectives written.

Friday:

Pumpkin Carving! Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who have offered to come in and help us with this activity! We are so lucky to have such great help!
Last week, we had a jack-o-lantern drawing contest in first grade. We voted on one winner per table group. These jack-o-lantern sketches will help us with our carving on Friday.

Welcome & Apple Orchard

WELCOME!

Welcome to our first grade blog for the 2009-2010 school year! What a great year we have been having so far. The students have learned so much in the past two months, and we are all looking forward to what the rest of the school year has to offer. I am so proud of the effort the first graders have been putting into their school work and in getting to know each other. It is a true joy to see their bright, smiling faces every morning. TUTTLE APPLE ORCHARD

On Tuesday, we took our first field trip with the second grade class. We went to Tuttle Apple Orchard in Greenfield, IN. The first graders did an excellent job of listening to our tour guide and learned so much on this trip! We learned about different types of apples, how the apple orchard is run, how bees pollinate the apple trees, how apple cider is made, and where ALL the apples go when they are picked.

Examining Lima beans with a magnifying glass, we found the roots and leaves. We peeled the skin off of the beans and discussed the reason a bean has skin. We also discussed what conditions are necessary in order for the bean to grow. Each child took home a bag of beans of their own to experiment with or make bean art!

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful

St. Joan of Arc received a grant from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. All day yesterday and today, volunteers from Eli Lilly, parishioners, parents, and the children helped to plant flowers, trees, put in new benches, and transform the landscape into a beautiful setting for children and families to play and spend time together. Please take a walk around the campus and enjoy all the new additions to SJA. Thanks to all who helped make this possible!

We practiced measuring in inches and centimeters today by measuring objects around the room that were less than 1 foot. We had a great time and learned a lot too!

Holy Thursday Pictures

The middle school did a great job acting out the Last Supper. The children were able to participate by eating bread and drinking the "wine" just as Jesus did with his disciples. It was a great way for the children to understand the importance of Holy Thursday.

Earth Day!

To celebrate Earth Day and bring awareness to the world's youth, the first grade will be taking a field trip to the Glendale movie theater to watch the new movie "Earth." Over the next few weeks, my goal is get the children thinking about how their everyday actions affect the health of the earth. Hopefully, the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle) will become a part of their vocabulary.

To kick off this topic, I am asking each child to bring in one to two items that CAN be recycled by this Friday, April 24. Hopefully, this sparks discussion at home and the children learn that they can make a difference.

On Monday, March 2, first grade will have a Read-In in honor of Dr.Seuss. This is such a fun day for the children! We will make green eggs and ham, write a book together, read our favorite books, and much more! We will be doing Dr. Seuss inspired activities during the month of March.
On Monday, the children may wear pajamas, bring sleeping bags/blankets, pillows, and their favorite books. I will be providing Teddy Grahams and milk as a snack. This is one of my favorite activities!

State House Field Trip

We had so much fun on our field trip to the State House today! The children were amazed by the beauty, architecture, and size of the building. They got to see the Supreme Court Room and wear a judge's robe, which was one of their favorite parts. Senator Taylor stopped by to visit and gave the children Indiana pins to wear on their shirts. The children also learned that Indiana became a state in 1816 and where the capitol was originally located, along with the original constitution.
I was so proud of the children's behavior on the field trip. We got several compliments, especially about how nice they all looked!

Catholic Schools Week was a great success! The children had so much fun participating in the service project (Pounds for Pasta), the carnival, dress up days, and much more. The first grade class brought in 72 pounds of pasta! Thank you to all who helped! Be on the lookout for pictures.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week begins Monday, January 26. The theme of Catholic Schools Week this year is SERVICE. SJoA will be collecting pounds of pasta to give to Second Helpings. Each class will be in competition with each other to collect the most pasta. The class who wins, will get a free lunch at Benihana's during school! The week is filled with lots of fun events that your child will certainly not forget!

Polar Express Day is a fun afternoon for the children. After lunch, the children "buy" tickets for 10 cents. Once they have found the correct amount of money they will receive a ticket to board the Polar Express Train. The "train" is in the hallway, where they will find seats lined up in two rows. They will listen to the story and be surprised by Santa at the end of their "ride." After the train ride they will arrive to the "North Pole" (their classroom) where they will be served hot chocolate. After their hot chocolate, they will watch the movie with K, 2nd, and 3rd grade in the gym. This activity will take the entire afternoon. The children really enjoy it and it is a fun way to end the 2nd quarter and welcome Christmas.

Santa's Bookshop

Santa's Bookshop will be held in Doyle Hall on Tuesday, December 2. This is a great way for you child to buy Christmas presents for their family and friends. The books, cd's, DVD's and other items will only cost from 50 cents to $2. There will be items for both children and adults. I will be taking the class, but it will also be open for you until 7 pm. What fun!

Special Person's Day

Special Person's Day is Wednesday, November 26. Your child's special person is invited to attend mass at 9 a.m. then join us in the classroom for breakfast. Each child has art work that he or she has been working on as well as work from the classroom. This is a great opportunity for the children to take pride in their work and spend time with a special person in their lives. The person your child has chosen can stay just for mass or come just for breakfast.
Dismissal is at 12:30; however, your child may leave early with his or her special person as long as there is a note from the parent.
Your child may wear dress up clothing or their uniform, but No Jeans!

Election Talk

To keep our children well informed citizens of the United States, the first grade class held their very own presidential election. The children were given identification cards that they filled out with me and "registered" to vote. We discussed that they each had a CHOICE to vote for whomever they felt was the best candidate. We also made a list of what qualities that make a good president. The children then had a choice to vote, they showed me their ID cards and went to a private booth to fill out their ballot.
Each first grader made the CHOICE to vote and received "I voted" stickers that they were very proud of.

Last week St. Joan of Arc was lucky enough to have a principal from Taiwan visit our school for two days. We greeted her with gifts from each class and the 2nd grade had prepared a song. When she came to visit our class, she showed us characters from her native language, Mandarin Chinese, needless to say, the class was amazed. She taught us how to greet one another and answered lots of questions that we had prepared. The class was very inquisitive of her culture and role in the school.

Flat Stanley Field Trip

Our trip to see Flat Stanley was a great success! I was so impressed with every child's behavior and manners. We had a great time watching Flat Stanley's adventures come to life. Ask your child about where Flat visited and their favorite parts of the musical. Before we saw the musical we talked about places/sites around the world: the Eiffel Tower, The Great Wall of China, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and a few others. We looked at pictures, found each country and city on the globe, and each picked a place to visit if we could go anywhere.
This activity tied into our school theme, Asia, and the musical, Flat Stanley.
We will be making our own Flat Stanley's soon, so if you have family in other parts of the country who would like to receive a Flat Stanley and then send it back to us with a letter and pictures of the city, please send me their address.

Pick a new one each night to engage your child and make learning exciting! Remember you can practice more than just the spelling words. Try to make other words in the word family we are working on.

Spelling tests will be each Friday. We will practice in class, but please study the words with your child each night. As the year goes on, the spelling list will increase. We will end the year with 15.

Dictation will begin Monday, September 8. I will say each sentence four times. After the fourth time, the students should be able to write the sentence. The sentences will be 4-7 words in length.

Accelerated Reader Process/Schedule

Each Wednesday, the children will check out a minimum of two AR books at their reading level. These books are to be read each night, several times, to the child, independently, or both. Everyday the library books need to be brought back to school in order to re-read and to take a quiz (a quiz cannot be administered if the book is not present). Therefore, it is imperative the books be brought to school daily. I will remind the children to put their AR books in their book bag each afternoon, but it is ultimately their responsibility.
We will test each child Tuesday morning with the help of a parent and an aid. It is also the child's responsibility to know which book they will be taking a quiz over. In the past, if there is a problem, parents have put sticky notes on the book that the child will take a quiz over.
As soon as I have a parent volunteer we will schedule the second AR quiz day.

How I Act Discipline Plan ( A more detailed version will be sent home)

2 reminders or less- Friday free time

3+ reminders/week- 5-6 minutes off of Friday Free Time, a note will be sent home to parents regarding behavior, and your child will fill out Behavior Plan with me.

Please read to your child and allow your child to read to you!

The more you and your child read the more successful your child will be. Reading will be heavily emphasized this year, as it is one of the most important years for your child’s development. Please join me to help your child get excited about reading!

Math- Daily for 45 minutes. Please provide problem solving skills at home i.e. cooking, measuring, money, time, math computer games, shapes, and signs when driving. Help your child to see the advantage of learning and how it applies to real life situations.

Writing- Daily in all areas of study. Encourage journals, letter writing, number writing, stories, 1-2 sentences about child’s day, favorite animal, funny events, etc.

Accelerated Reader: Reading goals can earn points and prizes! Child is read to, reads with, or reads alone. Takes computerized tests over the book that was just read within 24 hours. 1000’s of quizzes are available. Each child needs a library card

Folders

Blue Folder: This folder will be sent home with your child every Thursday. Papers from the office are sent home in this folder, so please empty and return on Friday. Also, papers completed by your child through out the week will be sent home. These are yours to keep. Please go over them with your child. Notice content that your child had trouble on and go over it with them. This will reinforce material in class and give your child extra one-on-one help!

Green Homework Folder: Every Monday, homework for the week will be put into the green folder. Homework is due on Friday. This is a great way to teach your child to organize his or her time, be responsible, and use their time wisely. The green folder should be returned to school everyday because the weekly How I Act sheet is attached, also in case extra homework time is given. You will also be able to find the spelling list for the week in the folder on Monday.

Red Seatwork Folder: This folder will be utilized in school only. If the student does not complete his or her seatwork in a timely manner then the work may be sent home.

Handbook Highlights

At 7:30 a.m. there will be adult supervision in the gym. Arrival after 8:00 will result in a tardy slip. Parent is to call in an absence by 8:30. If child is going home by different means, please send a note signed or call the office. If child is arriving late or returning from an appointment, parent must walk child to the office.

HOW I ACT

H- Havoc
O- Out of Order (Messy desk or work area, not following dress code)
W- Work not Turned In

I- Intentional Disobedience (Fighting or defiance and a call can be expected)

A- Attitude (Disrespect toward adults)
C- Conduct (Breaking school, classroom, or playground rules)
T- Talking (Talking out of Turn, not raising hand)

This behavior plan will be implemented in order to help your child remember school and classroom rules. After three re-directions your child will be asked to get a "reminder" under the specific behavior that occurred. For example, if the student shouts out in class after being asked to stop, he or she will be asked to put a "reminder stick" under the "C" for conduct.

A "HOW I ACT" Chart will be sent home daily to record any reminders. The chart should be initialed each night. Speak with your child about the misbehavior and what the child could have done in order to make a good choice. Praise your child when they do not receive "reminders."

Welcome to First Grade! I am so excited to begin my second year at St. Joan of Arc and meeting my new students. We are kicking off the school year at the Ice cream social on Sunday, August 17. Please join us for a fun afternoon and a chance to meet new friends, parents, and teachers.
The first day of school is a 12:30 dismissal on August 19.

Your eClassroom is a new tool to enhance the educational experience for you, your students and their families

An eClassroom is Essentially a Blog
Perhaps one of the most fascinating tools that has emerged from the Internet cloud in recent years is the Blog. A shortening of the term Web log, the Blog is an online publishing tool that enables people to easily publish their loves, passions, dislikes, peeves, discoveries, and insights.

Blogging is also showing up in schools, where teachers have known for a long time that students develop better communication skills when they are authentically communicating. A number of educators are helping their students developing their writing skills by having them publish their work as blogs, and then invite comments from people in the outside.

There are many freely available tools that facilitate blogging, but none seem especially suited for the classroom. That is the reason for developing the eClassroom for SJA. This online blogging tool is explicitly designed with teachers and students in mind, where the teacher can evaluate, comment on, and finally publish students' blog articles in a controlled environment. It is and will be constantly in development. We need your input to refine the look, content, layout of the eClassroom.

There are many options available to teachers who utilize web journals (blogs) to enhance the learning experience. Teaching in a participatory culture can be challenging, but rewarding. Today, teachers have to learn to communicate in the language and style of their students—who some call digital natives (inhabitants of the Web 2.0 world).

Assignments, etc.
For students in grades 4—8, the eClassroom will be the source point for classroom activites, supplemental learning resources, assignments, long-tern projects, links to relevant sites, field trips, etc. How you integrate your eClassroom may vary from other teachers, but understand that with regular use, this tool will become a vital part of your curriculum and teaching style.
